Description

This is the twelfth String Quartet composed by Dvorak. It was written, scored, as usual, for 2 Violins, Viola and Cello, in 1893, while he was in America. Few specific American influences have been found, save for the song of the Scarlet Tanager, first heard high in the First Violin in the Third movement.

It is in four movements, comprising

  • Allegro ma non troppo
  • Lento
  • Molto vivace
  • Finale: vivace ma non troppo

This is an outline of the work with musical examples.
