This second collection of melodies from operettas by Gilbert and Sullivan draws mostly upon their two sea-faring works: H.M.S. Pinafore and Pirates of Penzance. The melodies vary from martial through tended to triumphal; taking in, along the way, the comic song With cat-like tread, with its peace-shattering sforzando chords.
The melodies are shared around the orchestra and this arrangement is adapted from my earlier Wind Band version.
The orchestra is large but some parts can be omitted if unavailable and others could be adapted to be played by other instruments, providing the overall balance and timbre is maintained.
Flutes 1 & 2, Oboe, Clarinets in Bb 1 & 2, Bassoon, Soprano / Alto / Tenor Saxophones, Trumpets in Bb 1 & 2, Horn in F, Trombone, Tuba, Timpani, Drum Kit, Violins 1 & 2, Violas, Cellos, Double Bass.
The melodies are timeless and memorable and the arrangement was a firm favourite of both players and audiences alike. The required standard ranges from about Grade 3 / 4 to Grade 7 / 8.
