Description

Instrumentation: Flute 1, Flute 2 / Descant Recorder, Clarinet in B flat, Violin, Accordion / Piano / Guitar and Bass.

While aimed at Ceilidh Bands, it is also very suitable for general ensemble practice, whether using the whole set or just one or two tunes from it.

As with others in this series, the instrumentation is flexible and, in this case, the opening 8ve. for Flute 1 is, of course, optional.

It would be good practice for KS4 players or as an ensemble submission for the major GCSE boards, though regulations regarding doubling of parts would have to be checked.

Cumberland Square 8 is a lively dance for 4 couples arranged in a square formation, with one couple with their backs to each of the four walls of the dance venue.

Each tune is to be played through twice with repeats and the return to the first tune is optional: many callers will ask for this, though some might ask for another tune to be repeated as well – so be ready!

Make sure that your playing encourages people to want to dance!
