Instrumentation: standard Wind Band

This arrangement of a traditional Scottish song began life as a Brass Quintet, written shortly after my arrival at what was to be my last school. As more instrumentalists expressed an interest in joining the group and, in subsequent years, as there were simply more instrumentalists, so I revised the arrangement to become the Wind Band arrangement it is here.

It is to be played with an easy lilt and the dynamics should rise and fall like the waves of the sea, even within the little arpeggio figures found in the opening bars of the clarinet parts.

The trumpet part at letter F should never be allowed to overpower the other lines, especially the melody: better to omit it or give it to a solo Bb clarinet if the trumpeter cannot play it quietly.
