Description

Newcastle” is a traditional folk-dance tune linked to a traditional square dance of the same name. During my years as a folk dancer, this was one of the dances I learned to do and, later, learned to play when I took up the accordion or “vamped” an accompaniment on the piano. It is a fairly stately dance and the playing of the music should reflect this.

I was also introduced to a countermelody to this traditional tune, which was widely known and played. Unfortunately, I never did find out who had composed it and would love to be able to give due credit if the name is ever passed on to me.

Although I originally played it in an ensemble of two concertinas and either piano or accordion, my arrangement is for a flexible ensemble, her assigned to Flute 1, Flute 2 or Descant Recorder, Clarinet in B flat, Clarinet in C (or other instrument which has the appropriate range), Violin, Accordion / Piano / Guitar and Bass.
